Community Partnerships

Berkeley Lab strives to be a good neighbor and responsible community institution, and we are committed to giving back to the communities in which we live and work.  In addition to offering educational programs and activities that support the next generation of scientists and engineers and encouraging volunteerism in the community, the Lab also makes philanthropic contributions to non-profit organizations whose missions and values align with ours.

The Lab has been a longtime supporter of organizations such as the Berkeley Public Schools Fund, Community Resources for Science, Lawrence Hall of Science, Chabot Space and Science Center, and Biotech Partners.  Since 2016, the Lab, through its Government and Community Relations Office, has also given an annual "Community Partnership" donation to a local organization as a good neighbor gesture.  Previous donations have gone to the Berkeley Humane Society, CSU East Bay's Institute for STEM Education, the Lawrence Hall of Science, Rebuilding Together East Bay-North, and the Rising Sun Center for Opportunity.  Read more about these recipients below.

Rising Sun Center for Opportunity

Berkeley Lab is a strong supporter of Rising Sun, empowering youth and adult participants to achieve environmental and economic sustainability. Berkeley Lab has also provided a fundamental focus on STEM career and education opportunities. Rising Sun’s Climate Careers program introduces youth to sustainable career pathways and Berkeley Lab has been a key supporter in this practice.>>More

Rebuilding Together East Bay North

Several Berkeley Lab employees recently spent a Saturday volunteering with Rebuilding Together East Bay-North to make improvements to the South Berkeley Senior Center. Their efforts were part of a larger renovation of the center, which provides companionship, culture, and community for older adults in Berkeley. RTEBN also provides repairs for nonprofits and community organizations like schools, medical clinics and shelters that serve low-income people.  Berkeley Lab donated $10,000 to RTEBN, which will be used to support their work in the East Bay.  Sponsored through the Lab’s Government and Community Relations office, this marks the fourth annual “signature” contribution to a community organization that shares the Lab’s values.

Lawrence Hall of Science

Berkeley Lab selected the Lawrence Hall of Science as the recipient of its 2018 "Community Partnership" donation, in recognition of its efforts to inspire and foster science learning for all - especially for those with limited access to science.  As one of our closest institutional neighbors on the Hill, the Lab greatly values the strong partnership our two institutions share.

Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano Counties

Staff spent a recent Saturday morning at the Concord warehouse sorting through produce that will be distributed to families experiencing food insecurity in the area. The Lab’s Government and Community Relations office will host three more service days with FBCCS this year; please check the Berkeley Lab Service Portal at service.lbl.gov for those and other upcoming service opportunities.>> More

CSU East Bay Institute for STEM Education

The Lab has donated $15,000 to the California State University East Bay Institute for STEM Education’s Centers for Interdisciplinary Research and Collaborative Learning (CIRCLe) Labs program. Sponsored by the Lab’s Government and Community Relations office, this marks the second annual “signature” contribution to an organization that shares the Lab’s values.>>More

Berkeley Humane Society

The Lab, along with other donors, gave $50K to the Berkeley Humane Society to purchase a new digital radiograph machine. The instrument will help treat animals like Stanley (on the right), who suffered a severe hip injury. Stanley is now on the mend and ready for adoption.>> More
