2025 Long Range Development Plan

BERKELEY LAB PLANS FOR NEXT 20 YEARS

The Laboratory is preparing a new Long Range Development Plan (LRDP) to succeed the current 2006 LRDPThe forthcoming 2025 LRDP will guide the Lab in its continued development of safe, efficient, cost effective and operationally flexible infrastructure capable of long-term support of evolving scientific missions. Science and research needs drive the Lab’s development.

University of California (UC) LRDPs establish a framework of land-use principles and policies to guide future campus growth and change for periods of 10-20 years. The 2025 LRDP will include projections for campus population, building space, and parking through 2045.  To assess the potential environmental impacts associated with LRDP development, Berkeley Lab will prepare an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act.  The decision to adopt the 2025 LRDP and certify its accompanying EIR will be made by the UC Regents, expected to be in late 2025.

This webpage informs the public of the on-going LRDP and EIR processes and will provide documents for review when they become available.  Please find below a process schedule summary, links for forthcoming LRDP and CEQA documents (when available), instructions for public commenting, public announcements, and links to the current 2006 LRDP and LRDP EIR.  This webpage will be continually updated.

COMMENTING

During the 2025 LRDP EIR process, public comments were solicited by Berkeley Lab during the EIR scoping period (May 6-June 6, 2024) and will be solicited for the Draft EIR review period (anticipated to be 60 days in early 2025).

ANNOUNCEMENTS

LRDP EIR Public Scoping Period

A Notice of Preparation (NOP) to prepare an LRDP EIR was issued by Berkeley Lab with a 32-day public comment period--from May 6, 2024 to June 6, 2024.  The NOP described anticipated LRDP development parameters and the scope of the forthcoming EIR via Zoom on Wednesday, May 22, 2024 at 5:30 PM. Lab officials and planners made brief presentations to describe the LRDP and EIR processes after which public comments were solicited. The meeting was recorded by an independent court reporter, and a transcript will be provided in the Draft EIR.
