2006 Long Range Development Plan

BERKELEY LAB PLANS FOR NEXT 20 YEARS

The Laboratory has prepared its first Long Range Development Plan (LRDP) in 20 years. As outlined in the LRDP, the Lab will develop a safe, efficient, cost effective and operationally flexible infrastructure capable of long-term support of evolving scientific missions. Science drives the Lab’s development.

LRDPs establish a framework of land-use principles and policies to guide future growth and change through 2025. The plan identifies projections in population, building space, and land uses. This 2006 LRDP also includes an accompanying analysis of environmental impacts, pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act, and a Final Environmental Impact Report (EIR), providing an assessment of the proposed project and its potential effects on the environment, supports the LRDP. For a brief description of the Lab’s LRDP, please see the information in the presentation on Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Planned Growth given to the Berkeley Planning Commission, February 14, 2007.

The Berkeley Lab LRDP serves as a vehicle for dialogue with the community and a guiding document for those charged with oversight of the laboratory. It communicates the direction of the physical development and the planning principles that steer future development. The LRDP also calls for the Lab to preserve and enhance the environmental qualities of the site as a hillside rustic landscape, and a model of resource conservation and environmental sustainability.
